I tried ‘Emma Goodies’ Viral 50 Calorie Chocolate Cake

Some may say that it is too good to be true and honestly I think on most days I would have to agree with that sentiment. I mean if it was true to have a delicious dessert at such low calories, surely everyone would be talking about it? Surely ‘Emma’s Goodies’ would be selling her recipe to the highest bidder. And I for one wouldn’t blame her one bit. Or at least if it was possible to have a 50 Calorie Chocolate Cake, I’d have imagined it to be the grossest most inedible creation in history. But instead of placing these judgements, I thought it would be a great idea to test out ‘Emma’s Goodies’ Viral Gluten Free 50 Calorie Chocolate Cake Recipe. Wow, now say that three times fast. I tested it out so I could give you my true thoughts and then you can decide whether this recipe is worth your time after all.

Firstly I just want to make it very clear that this is not my recipe. I believe this recipe originates from the ‘Emma’s GoodiesYouTube Channel which I will link right here so you can go check out the origin post, if need be.

Gluten Free 50 Calorie Chocolate Cake Recipe

  • 80ml of Semi-skimmed milk
  • 2 Tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 180g of Plain Yogurt (I used Greek unsweetened)
  • 50g Cocoa Powder
  • 20g of Sweetener (I used stevia but every sweetener is different. 20g here is equivalent to about 70g of sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 60g of GF Oats (blended, should resemble a coarse flour)
  • 1tsp of Baking powder

Method

  • Pour the Milk, Yogurt and Vanilla into a microwave safe bowl and microwave for 50 seconds
  • Add the Cocoa powder to this warmed mixture and whisk until combined
  • Then go ahead and incorporate your sugar or sugar substitute of choice. Once again whisking until well combined.
  • Add the egg and mix well
  • Take 60g of Gluten Free oats (or regular if you’re not GF) and blend. I did this for about 60 seconds, so I had a flour consistency.
  • Add baking powder to Oat mixture and stir before adding the Oat flour to the Chocolate mixture.
  • Whisk well until you have a thick mixture with no powder remaining
  • Cook at 160 C for 35 Minutes (according to Emma), mine took about 45 minutes however.

50 Calorie Chocolate Cake- My thoughts and reality

So, where do I begin. I felt very excited about this recipe. I’m sure like most people I am always searching for guilt free ways to indulge cake cravings. I hoped I had hit the holy grail with the recipe and perhaps so had the diabetics all around the globe. If I listened well enough I could almost hear them rejoicing at the discovery of a sugar free, gluten free 50 calorie Chocolate cake recipe.

I have to say though, this cake is definitely an acquired taste. It is quite bitter, so I would definitely recommend for anyone out there with a love of high percentage chocolate to check it out. In her video Emma says this cake is best warmed up a bit, so it goes more fudge-like, and I would definitely agree with her.

However, is this the diet answer to all the chocoholics and cake fiends of the world? I would have to say… probably not. As much as I really wanted this cake to mirror the most calorific, sugary confection. In hindsight I realise that this was not a realistic expectation. So definitely bare that in mind if you’re going to try out this recipe for yourself.

It is definitely a viable alternative for anyone wanting to cut calories or avoid sugar for health reasons, so if that sounds like you, try it out and tell me what you think!

1000% respect to Emma’s Goodies for always creating great content and killing challenges to curate recipes such as this, under such unconventional baking constraints.

Thanks for reading!
